August 5, 2015 – HUD Midwest Regional Administrator comes to the Cherry St. Legacy Neighborhood

On August 5, 2015 Antonio Riley, Midwest Regional Administrator of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, came to the neighborhood along with Pamela Ashby, Field Office Director of HUD’s Cleveland Office . The HUD representatives visited with Ms. Saunders and her family that lives in one of the award winning Energy Star affordable housing units developed by Neighborworks in partnership with Cherry Street Legacy Project. The HUD visit was part of the ongoing support for the USEPA Area-Wide pilot on the part of the Sustainable Communities Federal Partnership.

In another part of the neighborhood, Mr. Riley interacted with over a dozen teens who were volunteering to repurpose vacant lots and streets. He spoke to the youth, sharing his life story of how he started in the projects and ended up in his current position. He personally met each young person.

Next he walked on a street that was once called murder alley. This street is undergoing repurposing into an urban ag area with goats and above ground garden plots thanks to the Glass City Goat Gals.

Mr. Reilly had a discussion with the Cherry Street Legacy Project on how a hospital can really improve the health of a community through community engagement and outreach.
