Glass City Goat Gals

GOATGALSGLAM-2Glass City Goat Gals LLC is a grazing business, founded in 2014. Their vision includes an urban farmstead/ land lab/community garden which resides on Mentor a short cul-de-sac comprised of abandoned lots and two houses. Unique Jones and Elizabeth Harris, two young community leaders who live in one of the houses, have invested in the neighborhood by beginning to develop the open lots into garden spaces for the benefit of the neighbors and especially the local children. Both gals have recently received an Urban Agriculture and Sustainability diploma from Owens Community College.

Known as the “Goat Gals”, they’ve cleared the properties and have started to plant natives and pollinator plants, introducing goats into the garden, amending the soil preparing for the upcoming spring. In 2014, they invited and worked with over sixty neighborhood children from Grace Community Center and YMCA Wayman Palmer, introducing 4H programs that included field trips, crafts, and hands on activities to the garden providing a STEM based school curriculum.

photoUnique and Elizabeth would like to continue to develop the cul-de-sac so neighbors can have their own plots to grow vegetables for themselves and others, which would provide them a positive place to interact with one another and build neighborhood bonds. In addition, the children can learn about gardening, good nutrition and enjoy nature.

In order to accomplish this goal they need to continue to build off of the progress they made in 2014 which will require hands on skilled help and funding. The garden areas consist of the In ground/large crop space, raised bed vegetable garden, goat area, pollinator/native plant/butterfly/bird area, experimental garden area and the gathering area.
